Our Digital Den

Our Digital Den allowed students to delve into the world of digital construction.

Led by Morgan Sindall Construction, this taster session allowed students to discover more about digital construction. They were also able to view BIM models using Virtual Reality (VR) technology, which is increasingly being used throughout the industry.

A Greener Future

Led by AtkinsRealis, this work taster was designed to educate young people on the environmental aspects of construction and how, through the sustainable delivery of projects, our efforts can help reduce carbon emissions for the benefit of both our planet but also our local communities.

As part of this, students got to task on sustainably insulating a model house.

COUNT On Us

The purpose of the COUNT On Us session was to help young people understand the cost of construction.

Led by Morgan Sindall Construction, this work taster took students into the world of Quantity Surveying; looking at cost and contracts in construction. Working in teams, students were required to cost and build a structure as per the design and materials provided to them. They were also made to monitor the time and budget, making sure to avoid defects during the build.

Let's Go Retro!

The purpose of the Let's Go Retro session was to inform young people about retrofit and building conservation.

Led by SIKA, this work taster took students into the world of flat roofing; each trying their hand at welding whilst learning about the role roofing contractors play in retrofit, conservation, and sustainable construction.

Carving Out Construction

Historic Environment Scotland (HES) led a stonemasonry session to provide young people with experience of working with stone.

Introducing young people in the UK to stonemasonry is crucial for preserving traditional skills and maintaining the country's rich architectural heritage.

One Build at a Time

A dual workshop, the young people got to try their hand both at bricklaying and experiencing the heights of scaffolding.

Lesterose led the brickwork session, with the young people having the opportunity to construct a small structure. They then headed outdoors where they met City Access Scaffolding and ascended the scaffolding on the external walls of The Engine Shed.

Spark

This taster session, led by FES, provided a practical mechanical & electrical exercise along with some top tips for the future.

The young people heard from FES team members on how to prepare a CV that stands out along with great pointers on interview etiquette. Then it was action time, with the young people trying their hand at installing and wiring a circuit.
