A new £17million, 48,000 sq ft secondary and sixth form school providing an additional 600 learning places for the City of Birmingham using the MySchool model as the basis for its design. It comprises 23 classrooms, a Learning Resource Centre, a reflection room, prayer room and four-court sports hall within a three-storey building. External facilities include two Multi Use Games Areas (MUGA) and a 4G sports pitch.
Despite disruption caused by the Coronavirus pandemic, the project completed five weeks early at the request of the school to accommodate early relocation of pupils from temporary teaching buildings two miles away.
Situated next to Spinningfields, New Bailey is a £650m mixed use development in an area of significant regeneration that aims to create a ‘gateway’ between Salford and Manchester.
Delivered in association with English Cities Fund (ECF) - a joint venture between Muse Developments, Legal & General and Homes England, it creates a business hub with Grade A office space, residential buildings, car parking, restaurants, bars and public realm. A7 is Morgan Sindall’s third of four projects delivered to date under the masterplan.
The 21-storey building features 199 apartments, including 98 one-bedroom, 81 two-bedroom and 20 three-bedroom homes. Communal facilities at ground floor level include a gym and exercise studio, a lounge and cycle store, as well as a private dining room with a fully-equipped kitchen which can be booked out for events. The construction utilises a reinforced concrete frame with post-tension concrete floor slabs. The core was constructed using slip form core construction, with the building founded on CFA piles. Off-site modern methods of construction have been integral to the project, with the installation of 300 bathroom and en-suite modular pods. The project features roof mounted photovoltaic panels which provide solar energy to the building. The building envelope features rainscreen cladding and curtain walling with masonry to the ground floor.
A brief overview of this project’s achievements include;
During pre-construction the team saved 12 weeks build time by adopting a timber frame solution, via our supply chain partner Streif UK. During the end of the project they also delivered the school five weeks ahead of schedule.
They achieved a number of carbon savings including, airtightness of 0.83m3/hr/m3/m2 meeting near Passivhaus standard. They also saved 798 tonne of carbon by switching to the timber frame solution, the savings of which were equivalent to heating 295 homes in the UK for a year!
What's more by using the Streif solution, they saved 145.2 tonnes of C02 emissions and 84,078 miles that would have been associated with delivering a steel frame. They adapted quickly through the pandemic, with smaller teams installing the pre-fabricated components. Overall the team achieved a Recommended score of 10/10 and were praised for their truly collaborative experience by the client.
"I have worked for Surrey for 16 years and Westvale is by far the best project I have experienced to date”.
The James Paget Hospital team (Tom Wilson, Will Smith, Richard King, Tom Grant, Andy Woollsey) have won this award for delivering yet another challenging project on time to a high quality in a high-pressure live environment. The team have completed five projects in the last three years all achieving a positive recommendation in final CEQs.
This project was the first with Dundee City Council and the relationship built over this project was excellent. The customer was more than delighted at all stages of the project which has put the team in good stead for securing future work. This project has also opened a new sector for us into more public realm and the social media coverage and interest in the project has been extremely high, it must've been those amazing umbrellas and deck chairs!
This project was so unique, it's city-centre location meant that all eyes of the city were on it! There was a also an unusual and technically challenging delivery of a whale statue to negotiate too. It provided development opportunity for the whole project team working on the site. From the extensive services co-ordination and programming required under the hard landscaping to the seating and paved finishes, to the design, detailing and plant required for the water feature. The flooded paving area, which also incorporated specific planting and seating was also a new project for the team. All in all, a significant result as the project also achieved Perfect Delivery.
