Our intelligent carbon reduction solution
The digital tool is a part of our intelligent solutions approach to support our customers decarbonise. Since 2021, we've utilised CarboniCa to help our customers remove tens of thousands of tonnes of carbon emissions with its findings.

CarboniCa cleverly highlights elements of the building that will result in higher emissions and suggests lower-carbon alternatives for the client, designers and our supply chain, ensuring that considered, environmentally-friendly decisions based on meaningful and robust data can be made.
CarboniCa is amongst the most sophisticated and completetools that I have seen, whichnicely balances complexity andsimplicity for most use cases.
A carbon reduction tool
Providing opportunity for carbon reduction by being easilty customisable and automatically generating ideas to save carbon.
Robust
All assumptions can be evidenced and there is a clear logic and methodology.
Highly credible
Third-party verified in line with latest industry guidance, including RICS Whole Life Carbon Assessment for the Built Environment professional statement EN 15978.
Easy to use
CarboniCa uses simple questions which align with methods of measurement, with no carbon assessment expertise required.
CarboniCa has been externally validated by Arup to the latest industry standards and is flexible to allow for different project types being undertaken. It's methodology is aligned to the UK Green Building Council (UKGBC) framework for net zero buildings, the aims of the Construction Playbook and the RICS professional statement on whole life carbon assessments.
Around 25% of the UK's total carbon footprint is from the built environment (UKGBC). Whilst the figure is stark, we can demonstrate that by using tools such as CarboniCa we're able to reduce carbon from the built environment at all stages of the project and building lifecycle and make significant progress in the fight to mitigate climate change.
But why work with us?
We've been working towards our carbon reduction goals long-before they became a compulsory part of what we do. We've reduced our Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 13% and our carbon intensity by 26% and are working to reduce our Scope 3 emissions in the value chain. We were the first UK construction company to have our approach to reducing carbon validated by SBTi (Science Based Targets Initiative). In fact, CarboniCa was primarily developed by our team as a tool to support our people to work towards our Science Based Targets targets. But we knew it had much wider potential for our customers and the industry.
It's use across a number of Morgan Sindall Construction projects to date has meant that we've been able to support our clients to work towards achieving their own net zero targets too upskilling and empowering them to make environmentally friendly decisions based on meaningful and robust data.
Case studies
Benefits for our clients
To date we've removed over 38,000 tonnes of carbon from our projects via this initiative.
CarboniCa plays a significant part in this challenge, as it's used to measure the carbon savings that can be achieved and empowers our teams to take action based on meaningful data. Most of the case studies in this brochure have come directly from the 10 Tonne Carbon Challenge.
The challenge enables the Morgan Sindall Construction team to enact behavioural change on construction projects, at a grassroots level, which means that new practices and processes to reduce carbon will now just become part and parcel of the construction process.

information
In 2023, Morgan Sindall Construction received its first Innovate UK grant for CarboniCa. This was for £80,000 to conduct a feasibility study into whether a carbon calculator tool would be a suitable tool for the classroom.
After hosting six workshops, in collaboration with Nottingham Trent University and Circular Ecology, we developed ‘CarboniCa Education’.
The education tool is designed to dovetail into higher education curriculum, and can also be used to upskill existing construction professionals, through interactive learning resources:
CarboniCa Engage – a phone app which introduces the concept of whole life carbon thinking in the built environment and acts as a conversation starter
CarboniCa Immerse – access to the full tool, enriched with tutorials to develop the skills needed for the transition to a low carbon built environment
