We used PANDA, a parametric design software, to plot hundreds of possible framing and grid options compare the relative cost and structural embodied carbon. After discounting unsuitable framing systems, we settled on an efficient RC frame with 225mm thicks flat slabs to suit the 6.6x7.2m grid.
Structural Panda is a unique software developed with the University of Cambridge. It allows users to thoroughly evaluate the impact of embodied carbon earlier in the design, where they can make the biggest savings. Structural Panda creates 100s of viable structural options from an initial building layout. It allows users to appraise any option against cost and embodied carbon. Parameters can be varied and different solutions tested. Its speed means this can be done many times over even as part of a collaborative workshop. Our research has shown that PANDA can reduce the structural embodied CO2 of a building by up to 50%.
