Why the just transition is important to us?

As the built environment and related sectors transition to a low carbon economy, procurers and commissioners of building projects are starting to consider how to mitigate the negative effects of that transition on vulnerable communities, businesses and individuals.

Approximately 6.3 million jobs in the UK, equating to around 1 in 5, are likely to be affected by the transition to a green economy (Just Transition Jobs Tracker). The UK construction industry employs approx. 3.1 million people. So as a business, we believe it’s important to make the Just Transition a key part of our ongoing strategy.

We are already delivering long-term decarbonisation projects and social value in our communities through our responsible business plans.However, many of our social value activities, driven through procurement by the Social Value Act (2012), are temporary by design. The just transition, in contrast, is all about leaving a permanent, positive and targeted legacy in vulnerable communities, improving lives and building resilience in local businesses.
