STEPPING STONE TO AN APPRENTICESHIP
Getting to the front of the queue through work experience involvement
One of the best ways to put yourself at the front of the queue for an apprenticeship is to get involved in work experience.
In various parts of the UK, we are offering work experience to students and partnerships with schools that spring boards them into our stepping stone programme.
In Abergavenny we have launched and are sponsoring their GCSE construction course, and in Southampton we are two years into a five-year partnership with Redbridge Community School. In order to create a positive impact beyond the boundaries of a £61 million new school that we are building in Abergavenny, we have helped launch and deliver their GCSE Construction course.
This involves investing in new tools, equipment and PPE for the students, whilst also delivering a programme of masterclasses over the two years.

Back in 2021, we signed a five-year partnership with Redbridge Community School.
As part of this, we are providing mentoring, classes and site experiences for the GCSE construction students.
Following the graduation of the first GCSE cohort, we are now mentoring five more students through college, with a view that apprenticeships will await them. Click here to learn more about the partnership.
It’s really important that what we teach, links to what children want to do and what they see in their lives. For them to go out into the real world and meet people who have these careers and to really be engaged in the master classes of those careers just makes a real difference. It inspires, it motivates and it leads to greater progress – it means the children leave us with a better idea of their next steps which is absolutely brilliant.
The partnership with Morgan Sindall began over two years ago and it’s really opened the eyes of our students . The connection they are providing to the real world is electric and it's rocket fuelling their excitement about the industry. There are areas that students hadn’t even considered, that they now see as future careers and that’s amazing. I think it’s the most magical education that we can give to students – we’re not just saying coming to school and learn, we’re saying come to school, learn and look at these opportunities we can put you on a pathway towards. And that, to me, is the absolute golden ticket.
