Designing, building and making operational in just ten months
Warndon Depot, Worcester | £1.7mNational Highways
The £1.7m refurbishment of National Highways' existing Warndon depot in Worcester was the first to handover.
The scope of works included the remodelling of the existing depot’s workspace to better enable closer working relationships between both National Highways teams and their partners. New office space, meeting rooms, and a communal canteen area was added, along with a large changing room with lockers, toilets and drying rooms. All stakeholders collaborated closely to try minimise any disruption to the depot, which remained fully operational through the 20-week programme. Being the first to handover, Warndon set the standard for the remaining depots, with successes, cost savings, and invaluable ‘lessons learned’ incorporated into the remaining three projects.
This depot is part of a range of improvements we're making to our estates, where our colleagues can come and work. It offers a fantastic opportunity to bring teams that used to be in different locations together so that they can work together as one.

Strensham Depot, Worcester | £7.2mNational Highways
Morgan Sindall also refurbished National Highway's existing Strensham depot before reconfiguring the depot's external areas to construct a new service and equipment storage garage and salt barn.
A key client driver on this project was sustainability. Work closely with the design team, Morgan Sindall adopted its Intelligent Solutions offering to incorporate off-site pre-manufactured solutions for elements of the salt-barn. Additional sustainable construction practices, coupled with the use of Morgan Sindall’s carbon reduction tool, CarboniCa, helped reduced emissions by 470 tonnes. The team also recycled more than 3,000 tonnes of coal tar found on the site, while excess materials and offcuts were donated to Walsall College to help reduce waste.
CarboniCa is a very, very sophisticated tool. I was impressed with what it will allow you to model and achieve. The level of granularity when it comes to data inputs - but also the output recommendations in the CarboniCa report - make it a very useful tool.

Doxey Depot, Stafford | £5.6mNational Highways
Doxey depot in Stafford was the first of two all-new multi-functional office building to be constructed.
Procured through the SCAPE framework, Morgan Sindall achieved - and in many cases surpassed - numerous performance targets to ensure the local area also benefitted from the works. For example, it bettered the social value target of 30% with an impressive return of 47.6%. This was achieved, in part, by 79% of project spend going to local businesses and 54% of work-force coming from within 30 miles of the site. 99% of the contract sum was spent with small to medium businesses, many of which were based locally. The team also spend £36.5k with Social Enterprises, whose primary purposes are to help underprivileged and disadvantaged people upskill or find work.
We’re really sensitive about the communities around us and we worked really hard to try and source as many suppliers from the local area – three out of every four pounds went to businesses within a 30 mile radius, which is fantastic for the local community.

Bescot Depot, Walsall | £6.2mNational Highways
Located directly under the M6 motorway, Bescot was the second multi-functional office building to be added to National Highways road-side depot locations in the Midlands.
Following the demolition and removal of an existing building, the new office can now bring together National Highways’ local teams with traffic officers, contractors and partners in a more environmentally friendly modern office space. With a focus on sustainability, aggregate produced during the demolition of the original building was crushed and recycled, to avoid being sent to landfill. Excess materials and offcuts were also donated to Walsall College. In total, the site team volunteered 47 hours of their time and raised close to £1,700 for the local community. The team also spent more than £35k with Social Enterprises.
Because of the time pressures, using SCAPE and bundling the four projects together enabled us to deliver the work in parallel. SCAPE brought that quick route to market, allowing us to engage Morgan Sindall through the early feasibility which helped complete the design in the shortest possible time.

We’ve seen the benefits since we’ve engaged SCAPE and their approach to getting projects in flight. We had a really open and collaborative relationship. Because of the time pressures, using SCAPE and bundling the four projects together enabled us to condense the work on four depot’s in parallel. SCAPE brought that quick route to market, allowing us to engage Morgan Sindall through the early feasibility which helped complete the design in the shortest possible time. One of the amazing outcomes is we’ve delivered all four depots in just 10 months.
