**Sustainability at its heart**
Reducing carbon from the build process
Working towards National Highways’ net zero carbon and environmental commitments, a focused and innovative approach to sustainability was adopted. Numerous carbon-reducing
technologies - such as air source heat pumps, solar panels, and smart energy-saving lighting systems - were chosen to improve the operational efficiency of the depots.
The project also benefitted from the use of our unique carbon calculator tool CarboniCa which helped identify a 38% carbon reduction compared to the original design.
The modular salt barn at Strensham was constructed off-site which offered a large carbon saving over the traditional method of rebuilding the barn at the depot. The lightweight design provided greater resource efficiency and a reduced construction period on site.

10 Tonne ChallangeCarbon savings achieved during the construction
The project team worked collaboratively with its supply chain to encourage waste reduction from the build. As part of the company’s ‘10 Tonne Challenge’ initiative, aggregate produced from the demolition of an existing building at Bescot was crushed and recycled, rather than being sent to landfill.
The team also recycled more than 3,000 tonnes of coal tar found on the Strensham site, while excess materials and offcuts were donated to Walsall College to help reduce waste.
Adopting Morgan Sindall’s Intelligent Solution approach, the team worked with bulk storage buildings supplier, Eurodome, to facilitate the construction of a modular salt barn at Strensham.
Watch the above video to see how early engagement with Morgan Sindall allowed for a modular solution at Strensham.
Working with bulk storage buildings supplier, Eurodome, a modular salt barn was facilitated that utilised off-site technologies and modern methods of construction. The lightweight modular structure offered 441 tonnes of carbon savings compared with a traditional salt barn – which is the equivalent of heating 164 homes annually.
