Net Zero in Operation
Innovative solutions that enable our clients achieve their own net zero ambitions

In 2021, Morgan Sindall Construction delivered a batch of three innovative education projects for Essex County Council that each achieved Net Zero in operation.
What is Net Zero in operation?
Net zero refers to the balance in greenhouse gasses that are produced and removed from the atmosphere. This is often achieved through emission reduction and/or emission removal. In this instance, not having a negative impact on the planet whilst in operation.
How did we achieve this?
Our teams utilised a combination of techniques throughout the design and construction phases - most notably the use of modular construction, which involved the respective structures being built offsite as separate ‘modules’ before being transported and assembled on location.
The modular design allowed for the implementation of renewable technologies, such as solar (photovoltaic) panels and a fabric first approach to the heating and ventilation systems for each building. All three are A-Rated and achieved a BREEAM 'Very Good' rating.
Whilst achieving net zero carbon in operation was not a contractual requirement for these projects, our teams collaborated effectively to reach this target – the first of its kind in Essex.
Works included the development of a brand new teaching block containing eight general teaching classrooms, two resistant material technology rooms, two food technology rooms, a seminar room and plant room.
This expansion project included the construction of a brand new standalone teaching block, creating 10 general teaching classrooms, a plant room, and a four-court sports hall.
Works included the construction of a single storey standalone teaching block to the south east of the existing school, which provided an extra 150 school places for children of high school age.
Sustainability will be a main driver going forward, especially the need for net zero through the build and in operation. We didn’t need any additional budget to achieve these outcomes. They are above DfE specification, deliver upon net zero needs and also BATOD specifications, which are higher specification acoustics and lighting. It’s a great outcome delivered in a very short timescale.
