Giving back to nature
Doing our bit to boost biodiversity in the region
Morgan Sindall Group established an exciting new partnership with the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) in 2022. The aim being to help the restoration of wetlands at Lakenheath Fen, on the Norfolk/Suffolk border, to help create a haven for wildlife.
Our investment will allow the RSPB to purchase farmland (the size of 81 football pitches) next to their existing site, to extend the habitat by converting these fields into a peat rich, biodiverse wetland. The benefits of this investment will be significant; bringing a range of birds and other wildlife to the area, in addition to protecting the peat which is stored in the soil, reducing carbon emissions.
Having announced this project in February 2023, we're excited to share more soon. This is an exciting commitment that complements the work we’re supporting across the UK, such as the planting of nine new woodlands on the Blenheim Estate in Oxfordshire.
We’d like to say a huge thank you to the Morgan Sindall Group – with their support, we will be able to return a large section of land to nature, enabling endangered species to recover and also locking away carbon to help preserve our own future against the climate crisis. Lakenheath Fen is a very special place - it saw the first cranes fledge in the Fens for about 400 years, and we can’t wait to see what other wildlife comes to make it their home.
Volunteering over 280 hours to create an outdoor wildlife area for pupils to enjoy
As part of Neighbourhood Week 2022, our Cambridge team volunteered 284 hours to create an outdoor wildlife area for the pupils at Wintringham Primary School in St Neots.
The idea behind the scheme was to clear a patch of land and create a new pond, encircled with hard standing encircling (for pond dipping), in addition to landscaping the area with new plants. £4,260 of materials were donated to complete the outdoor project, which is now being used by the pupils.
This scheme delivered a 77% return on project cost through the Social Value Bank, delivering £13,605 of social value investment.
The pond is part of the part of the national curriculum, so this project is leaving a massive legacy. You've kindly come in and cone it free of charge and actually that shows that it's not all about money in this world, it's about caring for your community. It's fantastic. I know it's only a pond, but this makes learning so much more exciting, it makes it more real.
