West Suffolk Operational Hub | £24mBury St Edmunds, Suffolk
This was a project that has provided a joint strategic asset for three local councils, providing a centralised, improved and transformed waste management facility for the Suffolk region delivered through the framework.
This state-of-the-art facility has bought together several operational services on one site to reflect the anticipated growth in population and housing in the area.
Across the site there is a waste transfer station, recyclate bailing facility, household waste recycling centre, fleet maintenance and wheel wash depot, landscaping and tools storage, extensive surface parking and offices. To keep the community informed, the project had a dedicated website and regularly opened its doors for the public to visit.
The shift in the community here has been immense. They now feel ownership and they feel proud of it and that's credit to you for the work you've done with the community. You walked the talk with CCS Ultra and restored my faith in the industry.

Hammerstone Road Depot Refurbishment | £24mManchester City Council (North West Construction Hub)
Refurbishment of an existing Manchester City Council waste disposal and maintenance depot located at the old Gorton Foundry site. The building dates back to the 1800s and its original use was a locomotive shed.
The refurbishment works will enable a number of Manchester City Council services to operate from a single location. This in turn will increase utilisation, reduce carbon emissions and improve the accommodation. Morgan Sindall has developed innovative solutions to retain materials from the existing building and reduce construction waste. One such feature is a cathodic protection system which uses low levels of electrical current to control the corrosion of the existing steel columns and retain their structural integrity within the refurbished building.
The renovation of the Hammerstone Road depot will rescue and restore a heritage building and create a great place for Manchester City Council staff to work. Morgan Sindall have worked collaboratively with us to develop a high standard of design, within budget.

Atlas Works | £15.3mBirmingham
Delivered through the Constructing West Midlands Framework, this is the relocation of two service depots into a super facility.
The construction of a two storey office buildings and single storey vehicle maintenance building as a waste services depot for Birmingham City Council enabled the integration of waste services. Repairs, maintenance and MOT servicing on the Council’s fleet of vehicles are undertaken on site as well as MOTs on vehicles owned by the public.
The steel framed, metal clad buildings have an area of 3600m2 and also include a large parking area with electric charging points. During the project over 160 hours were donated to community projects with 84% of the project spend channelled locally.
I am blown away by this new facility. Our hardworking crews operating from this depot will make more than 200,000 bin collections every week – so it is essential that we provide them with the tools and conditions to do this as effectively as possible.

Strensham Depot, Worcester | £7.2mNational Highways
Morgan Sindall also refurbished National Highway's existing Strensham depot before reconfiguring the depot's external areas to construct a new service and equipment storage garage and salt barn.
Sustainability was a key client driver on this project with numerous carbon-reducing technologies incorporated into the buildings, such as air source heat pumps, solar panels and more efficient lighting. Morgan Sindall also worked closely with the design team to incorporate off-site pre-manufactured solutions for elements of the salt-barn that provided programme and cost savings. Additional sustainable construction practices, coupled with the use of Morgan Sindall’s carbon reduction tool, CarboniCa, also helped reduced emissions by 470 tonnes.
CarboniCa is a very, very sophisticated tool. I was impressed with what it will allow you to model and achieve. The level of granularity when it comes to data inputs - but also the output recommendations in the CarboniCa report - make it a very useful tool.

Bescot Depot, Walsall | £6.2mNational Highways
Located directly under the M6 motorway, Bescot was the second multi-functional office building to be added to National Highways road-side depot locations in the Midlands.
Following the demolition and removal of an existing building, the new office will look to bring together National Highways’ local teams with traffic officers, contractors and partners in a more environmentally friendly modern office space. With a focus on sustainability, aggregate produced during the demolition of the original building was crushed and recycled, to avoid being sent to landfill. Excess materials and offcuts were also donated to Walsall College. In total, the site team volunteered 47 hours of their time and raised close to £1,700 for the local community. The team also spent more than £35k with Social Enterprises.
Because of the time pressures, using SCAPE and bundling the four projects together enabled us to deliver the work in parallel. SCAPE brought that quick route to market, allowing us to engage Morgan Sindall through the early feasibility which helped complete the design in the shortest possible time.

Doxey Depot, Stafford | £5.6mNational Highways
Doxey depot in Stafford was the first of two all-new multi-functional office building to be constructed.
Procured through the SCAPE framework, Morgan Sindall achieved - and in many cases surpassed - numerous performance targets to ensure the local area also benefitted from the works. For example, it bettered the social value target of 30% with an impressive return of 47.6%. This was achieved, in part, by 79% of project spend going to local businesses and 54% of work-force coming from within 30 miles of the site. 99% of the contract sum was spent with small to medium businesses, many of which were based locally. The team also spend £36.5k with Social Enterprises, whose primary purposes are to help underprivileged and disadvantaged people upskill or find work.
We’re really sensitive about the communities around us and we worked really hard to try and source as many suppliers from the local area – three out of every four pounds went to businesses within a 30 mile radius, which is fantastic for the local community.

Melton Cattle Market | £5.5mMelton Mowbray, Leicestershire
The construction of a new cattle market in place of the old one including surface car park and collection yards.
The existing facilities, especially those for auctioning cattle, were in a poor condition and no longer fit for purpose. Replacement pens were required to ensure that the Melton Livestock Market remains safe, competitive and continues to comply with increasingly stringent Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs requirements.
One of the key challenges overcome with our specialist supply chain was the contaminated ground conditions.
The new livestock building has an acre of floor space, housing 173 pens and with a capacity for over 1,000 animals.
We're delighted! The new building will be a beacon for the urban and rural economy for the next 20 years. It is testament to the dedication of all involved that we have not only been able to keep the market open, but grow livestock numbers during the works.

The Depot Film Studios | £3.5mLiverpool City Council (Pagabo framework)
Fast track scheme creating two temporary sound studios on the site of the Littlewoods building. The project forms part of a major redevelopment of the site to create a state-of-the-art tv and film studio centre.
The Depot forms part of the council’s £50m redevelopment of the iconic Littlewoods Building on Edge Lane into production studios which will support the city’s rapidly growing TV and Film industry. The project comprises two identical 20,000sq ft ‘sheds’ with footprints of 60m x 30m.
The steel framed superstructures feature concrete floor slabs and columns fixed to reinforced concrete bases. Walls and roofs are clad in two skins of profiled metal sheeting, with acoustic insulation between to satisfy sound requirements.
The Depot will cement Liverpool as one of Europe's premier film and TV production hubs. I have enjoyed working with Morgan Sindall's project team, who worked collaboratively and professionally throughout.

Warndon Depot, Worcester | £1.7mNational Highways
The £1.7m refurbishment of National Highways' existing Warndon depot in Worcester was the first to handover.
The scope of works included the remodelling of the existing depot’s workspace to better enable closer working relationships between both National Highways teams and their partners. New office space, meeting rooms, and a communal canteen area was added, along with a large changing room with lockers, toilets and drying rooms. All stakeholders collaborated closely to try minimise any disruption to the depot, which remained fully operational through the 20-week programme. Consideration was also given to the local area and residents, with perfect CCS scores (45/45) and CLOCS scores (23/23) reflecting its sympathetic delivery.
This depot is part of a range of improvements we're making to our estates, where our colleagues can come and work. It offers a fantastic opportunity to bring teams that used to be in different locations together so that they can work together as one.

Aggreko Manufacturing Facility | £20mDumbarton
Morgan Sindall was appointed by Aggreko plc to construct their new flagship manufacturing and headquarters building at Lomondgate on the edge of Dumbarton.
This state of the art facility houses Aggreko's plant to design, develop and manufacture power generators and temperature control equipment for the worldwide market. To the front of the main production area is a two storey office development which houses the global headquarters for Aggreko plc as well as the design and production offices.
We assisted Aggreko in incorporating an internal test bay area within the production facility: the first of its kind. Morgan Sindall also assisted in developing prototype ventilation system for the test bay area. An exportation substation has been installed inside the building to allow power to be re-used when testing completed energy generators.
Crucial to Aggreko was the safe and timely delivery of their overhead crane equipment in the new building. To facilitate this we developed an integrated construction programme which for delivery during the construction phase. This contributed to the successful delivery and handover of the project.
