Our teams have worked on a large variety of buildings with specialist subcontractors and in close liaison with heritage offices to ensure buildings are restored and adapted carefully.
From castles to colleges and hotels to restaurants we have sensitively delivered extensions are refurbishments of all shape and size.
Lambeth Town Hall and Ivor House | £81mLondon Borough of Lambeth
Working with developers Muse, we refurbished the Grade II listed town hall in Brixton and built a new six-storey, energy efficient civic centre. The locally listed, Art Deco Ivor House has been given a new lease of life, bringing 26 stunning apartments and extensive basement and ground floor retail space to the heart of SW2.
This dramatic regeneration project has consolidated the council's buildings from 14 to two, saving taxpayers £4.5 million a year.
The project was a masterclass in logistics planning. Our three buildings - which took up the entire footprint of the triangular site - surrounded renowned music venue Electric Brixton. Remaining fully functional throughout the work, we managed forty tonnes of structural steel, 3,500 workers, and countless tour buses through our site entrance.
The feedback from the tours, visitors, the public, councillors, and staff coming into both buildings has been incredible. Bringing the Town Hall back to life has been very well received by everyone who knew it before.
Various
A new home for the faculties of Acting, Humanities, Languages and Social Sciences. The complex project comprises a retained Grade II listed facade, seven storey new build, basement levels and performance theatre.
Located on the site of the old 1970’s Mable Tylecote building, the dated structure was demolished to make way for this new facility which also retains a Grade II listed façade dating back to the 1832. This creates a state-of-the-art modern facility which also reflects its history.
The facility features a state-of-the-art 182 seat performance theatre, and the North West’s first Poetry Library, one of only four in the UK. The building also features a lecture theatre as well as numerous high specification performing arts, TV and radio studios - all box in box construction.
This was delivered collaboratively and has achieved an outstanding building thoroughly enhancing the University’s estate. Compliments to the team for mitigating the impact of the pandemic during the critical, final months of the project.

Tonyrefail School | £35.2mTonyrefail, South Wales
Delivered for RCT County BC, Tonyrefail School is a new 3-19 school on the site of the existing school.
The project, procured through the SEWSCAP framework, was delivered across four simultaneous phases of work that could not impact the existing school. This included a new primary school, refurbishment of the existing Grade II listed school to provide a sixth form, a new secondary school extension, and then finally connection of the whole site and installation of a new car park.
As part of the project, the team also upgraded the existing leisure centre that sat at the end of the site. During the build, the team managed working with the local community, the live school, and also the heritage officers to ensure the careful refurbishment of the listed school building.
Morgan Sindall have been very welcoming, making us feel very involved. I'm flabbergasted at the level of attention and care paid to the running of an existing school, ensuring the continuation in the quality of their education, that has been extremely impressive.

Houlton School | £38.9mRugby, West Midlands
Delivered for the DfE and Urban & Civic, Houlton school involved new build and refurbishment of an existing Grade II listed radio station.
Houlton School has become the key ingredient in the recipe for a successful new community. Marrying listed building restoration, with state-of-the-art new development, the former Rugby Radio Station is now answering the secondary school place shortage with a brand new £38.9 million state of the art secondary school.
This project starts from the conviction that reuse is more sustainable than new building, justifying the retention of the heritage buildings, despite their challenges. Huge effort has been put into making sure the whole project leaves a sustainable legacy.
It speaks of quality the moment you walk through the door. Parents have said it’s like coming to an independent school without the fees. We are incredibly fortunate, all of our facilities are fantastic and state-of-the-art.

55 Colmore Row | £28mBirmingham
Refurbishment of a Grade II listed building, new façade and vertical extension at the heart of Birmingham for IM Properties.
The building now has 160,000 sq ft of grade A office space over six floors. Situated on the corner of Church Street and Colmore Row, it has Grade II-listed Victorian terrace façade which overlooks Birmingham Cathedral. The historic, listed 19th century banking hall formed a central part of the redevelopment and was fully restored and reconfigured as a reception area.
Given the location of the project, logistics was a key factor - careful liaison with the authorities enabled tower crane erection, deliveries, road closures and a specially designed pit-lane delivery system to keep roads accessible for as much of the project as possible.
Delivering complex projects isn’t just about the quality, cost and time elements, it’s also about the experience. The support we got from the team was exceptional. They knew their subject matter really well, but they also really cared about what they were delivering.

University House | £18.2mUniversity of Birmingham
Delivered for the University of Birmingham using the CWM framework, University House is an extension to the existing business school.
The new extension and refurbishment provides the Business School with an additional 140-150 academic and professional services office spaces, as well as a number of high-quality meeting rooms and social spaces for staff, the majority of which are proposed as single person academic offices.
This will allows the School to consolidate all of its non-teaching activity on one site, maximising operational efficiencies. In addition to the large new build, an extensive refurbishment of the Grade II listed business school was carefully undertaken.
Morgan Sindall Construction has worked closely with the design team to produce a building of real quality which sits appropriately in the context of the original listed building. The extension is a great addition to the University's estate.

Pantycelyn Halls | £16.5mAberystwyth University, Wales
The refurbishment of a Grade II listed building to create 198 en-suite bedrooms.
Delivered through the SEWSCAP framework, the project's vision was to bring back to life one of the first buildings to be constructed on the site. The building was built in 1951 and was designed by Sir Percy Thomas - the site was even more restricted due to the surrounding gardens having a Grade II* listing.
As well as the heritage conservation, the team worked through several sever storm events, as it was located within 1.5 miles of the Irish Sea. They also set up a dedicated bilingual project website which included images, videos and updates. This also formed part of the careful logistics and liaison strategy working around the live campus.
We are delighted to be bringing to life once more a hall that has been the focus for the Welsh culture at Aberystwyth University for almost half a century. This project represents an investment in the future of Welsh speaking students for generations to come.

Camden Methodist Church (The Wesley Hotel) | £9.2mLondon Borough of Camden
Camden Methodist Church has been transformed into a 39 bed, four-star hotel, run by The Wesley Hotel. The lower ground floor underwent a comprehensive refurbishment and will continue to be used as a church worship space.
The building’s upper floors now house a luxury hotel located across the ground to fourth floors following sensitive remodelling to retain its historic character.
The upper floors also feature high acoustic ratings to minimise transfer of sound between the hotel and the church and a high-performing acoustic ceiling has been installed in the lower ground floor worship space. The building achieved a BREEAM Excellent rating, in-keeping with the environmental standards the client strived to achieve.
As a collaborative project with The Methodist Church, we’re so pleased to be able to safeguard the future of this wonderful listed building, whilst opening it up to UK and international visitors and introducing them to one of the capital’s most exciting locations.”

Cambridge Union Society | £4.3mCambridge, Cambridgeshire
The complete refurbishment of a Grade II listed building for the University of Cambridge.
Works on the building including the restoration and rebuild of the original façade, internal refurbishments, demolition of the old toilet blocks and construction of a new link building, remodelling of the basement, creation of a new public café and restaurant, complete overhaul of the mechanical and electrical services and numerous accessibility improvements throughout the building.
The CUS project was carried out right next door to our student accommodation new build project, therefore joint design co-ordination was key to ensure these schemes linked together seamlessly both physically and programme wise.
The project team were great, customer focused people. I was very impressed with the safety approach and the systems adopted for working through a pandemic. They really helped with getting an affordable scheme in place despite an inadequate budget.
