Using construction as a catalyst for good
Events like this can act as a vital catalyst for young adults, ultimately helping simplify that seemingly daunting task of deciding what they want to achieve in their professional lives.
What was also encouraging to see was the impact the event has continued to have in the days and months that followed. The following are just a few examples of how the event has improved peoples lives.
Learning & Development Advisor at Morgan Sindall Construction
Currently in their second year of a BA Digital Media degree, the three students attended both days and filmed more than 200 young people and 50 professionals, whilst also working with the Morgan Sindall marketing team to film and interview Councillor Kane, Leader of Stirling Council.
In between filming, the students worked in a staff room full of professionals of varying levels of seniority and conducted themselves in a fantastic manner. This partnership provided the students with an opportunity to obtain real life work experience, over and above their course requirements.
Students were briefed on the project by Project Manager, Gregor Forsyth, before witnessing the works in action from the safety of an excluded zone.
Once back inside, the students were informed of the various careers and pathways available within the construction industry. They were also given advice on interview techniques and CV writing, as well as given tips on how best to stand out when applying for a job.
For many of them this has validated their interest in this area but has made them consider what pathway and route they want to take now they have a better understanding of their options.
The team discussed with students the roles and pathways in construction and the reality of working in the sector - the variety, differing locations, job satisfaction, team work and so much more.
Where students showed an interest in construction trades, such as gaining an electrical apprenticeship, the team was also able to direct them to one of its preferred contractors.
The students were very enthusiastic and receptive to what a career in construction could offer, with many now considering it as an serious option going forward.
After discussing various pathways into the construction industry, both soldiers, and a colleague who joined them, were invited to Morgan Sindall’s head office to discuss in more detail. The first solider is now seeking out a construction management course at a local college, while the second is looking at taking an apprenticeship route into the industry. The third colleague, who has recently left the Army, was given advice at how best to proceed as well as support with things like his CV, helping him realise his transferable skills and providing work experience on one of our live sites.
Only by true collaboration can the inherent challenges that exist within the construction industry be identified and challenged. This event proved just this, with SCAPE's delivery partners joining with some of the UK’s most influential construction and consultant firms, for the greater good.
