Scottish Apprenticeship Week!

Here at Morgan Sindall Construction Scotland, we have been celebrating Scottish Apprenticeship Week 2024 and sharing stories of how our apprentices unlocked their potential through various apprenticeships routes!

This week we highlighted how apprentices and employers flourish through apprenticeships and used this week as an opportunity to celebrate how learning providers, such as our Joint Venture partner Tigers, support apprentices to achieve their full potential.

Apprenticeships allow people from diverse backgrounds and abilities to gain and develop skills. These skills will support individuals throughout their life and in work. They'll also support economic priorities and renewal, including Net Zero ambitions.

BAILLIE

Graduate Apprentice

To give you an insight in our GA route, Baillie talks you through a day in the life of a Trainee Quantity Surveyor.

Baillie is undertaking a Graduate Apprenticeship and is in his third (of four) year of the Construction & Built Environment (Quantity Surveying) course at Glasgow Caledonian University. The day in the life highlights what you might expect from a day as a Trainee Quantity Surveyor on our Maybole Community Campus project.

I believe the graduate apprentice route is the perfect fit to begin a career in the construction industry. It allows the trainee to gain more experience as they will be involved in day-to-day tasks that a fully qualified person would do. Morgan Sindall is very supportive in helping the trainees gain the experience and confidence they need in order to complete their degree with relevant workload and support as well as receiving a full-time wage along with company benefits. It removes the tedious task of searching for a job once completing your degree full time. Advice that I would give to a young person looking to start a graduate apprenticeship is to work hard and the possibilities are endless as the construction industry is so diverse.

I would recommend a Graduate Apprenticeship in construction as the industry knowledge it gives you, you can't get from a normal university route. No two days in construction are ever the same.

KIERAN

Graduate Apprentice

To give you an insight in our GA route, Kieran talks you through a day in the life of a Trainee Site Manager.

Kieran is undertaking a Graduate Apprenticeship and is in his second (of four) year of the Construction & Built Environment course at Heriot Watt University. The day in the life highlights what you might expect from a day as a Trainee Site Manager on our Lennoxtown High Park project.

Learning on the job is key to the part time studying at university. The daily tasks and what I learn on site, sets me up to have a better understanding in my university modules. Another benefit of part time studying is, I will gain a qualification from Herriot Watt University in Construction Management and Built Environment which will help me grow my career at Morgan Sindall.

Shared Apprenticeship scheme

A Morgan Sindall and Tigers partnership.

We continue to support VAST; a unique, values-aligned joint venture created by Tigers, a private training provider and us, Morgan Sindall Construction, a Tier 1 Contractor, with the vision of creating accessible and inclusive training and employment pathways into the construction sector.

VAST has created a new 20-week pre-apprenticeship programme which can lead into a Construction and Civil Engineering Operations L5 Apprenticeship with Morgan Sindall.

The pre-apprenticeship programme includes a variety of construction and built environment skills including bricklaying, civils, engineering, and joinery.

We will also introduce our learners to an array of digital construction skills and sustainable working practices. Our groups will be taken through an SQA accredited unit, Sustainability in the Built Environment.

Our first intake saw 29 young people commence their apprenticeship in November 2021 with 13 who obtained their Construction and Civil Engineering Operations: General Construction at SCQF Level 5, and 2 who completed the Modern Apprenticeship with their new employers.

We also seen 19 progress onto full-time employment or further technical apprenticeships thanks to the support of our supply chain partners!

In 2023, a further 29 young people commenced the pre-apprenticeship programme on 23rd January 2023 and their practical skills alongside certification in Manual Handling, Abrasive Wheels, Vehicle Marshalling, Working at Heights, Asbestos Awareness, 1 Day Health & Safety and his CSCS card and were facilitated at our Carnbroe and Sikeside Hub as well as the Construction Academy at Bishopbriggs.

This led to 18 Modern Apprenticeship Apprentices who started with us on 24^th April 2023 from the North Lanarkshire area; 2 of which have moved on to full-time employment with Roskel and ETS and 1 who made the decision to return to college in a different field of study.

Our next intake for 2024 will be in April for approximately 18 MA apprentices from the East Dunbartonshire and North Lanarkshire area. Watch this space!

Shared Apprenticeship scheme

Aaron, Callum & Jack all completed Modern Apprenticeships as part of our shared apprenticeship scheme.

Having completed their qualifications they're now employed by Dalcon Civil Engineering working across Scotland!
