Bay Technology Centre in Swansea, completed in 2022, represents a step change in building design. Surpassing ‘net-zero’, it proves a concept to create a ‘building as a power station’ and is the first commercial facility in Wales that is energy positive in operation.
Driven by Neath Port Talbot County Borough Council, the initiative supports their Decarbonisation and Renewable Energy Strategy.
The project had a clear mandate – go beyond net-zero, to provide an energy positive building producing more energy than it consumes by utilising and integrating existing and new technologies. The result – the building usage equates to 66.5kWh/m2 per year, whilst the on-site energy generation produces 69.1 kWh/m2 per year.
We sat down with the project team to understand which technologies were used and what solutions had been employed to help achieve this result.
