An extension within the heart of Thorp Academy. Our project will provide an additional 10 classrooms, a dining hall extension, toilet facilities, office and store facilities and a plant room to provide additional capacity for the increased student numbers at Thorp Academy, Ryton.
The 2 storey building is due to be completed by December 2025, ready for the academy to use the additional space in the 2026 spring term.
Enabling works have been well underway since January with piling works successfully completed in February. To mark the occasion, we held a celebratory ground breaking event in March.
The past few weeks have seen some great progress with the steel frame and ground floor staircase erected.
March saw outstanding collaboration between our Project Team - Jacob Charlton, Tej Dogun, and Fran McGrath, Academy staff and Wyn Construction during the concrete pouring phase of our project. A big thank you goes out to everyone involved for ensuring the process ran smoothly, safely and efficiently. With 22 wagons delivering concrete to site, the project team expertly managed the logistics, while additional academy staff were brought in to ensure the safety of the students throughout the entire process. Wyn Construction did an excellent job with the foundations and the overall execution of this crucial phase.
On the outskirts of our build in a protected area teeming with newts and other wildlife, we have a charming little family of long-tailed tits safely nestled in a calm space of an otherwise bustling environment of busy construction work.
The long-tailed tit, with its distinctive tiny size and fluffy appearance, isn't a particularly common sight in the North East so it's great to see they chose Thorp Academy to raise their young.
