More than just waste

This £32 million brand-new super-hub for waste and recycling in Walsall will deliver more for its community than what you might think.

Whilst it will ultimately be known for how it will help reduce, recycle and transfer waste, it is in the re-use element of the centre, that will upcycle many items and help less fortunate members of the local community, where it will also make it's mark.

As well as welcoming numerous schools to the project to learn, three young students from the local community, have continued to visit, to understand more about what this place will mean for them.

Lola

I really liked hearing about the re-use workshop. At home we donate things when we can, so this will be a really good place for people to come and get things that they need.

Lola

Putting things in landfill is not good for the environment, so this place will make a big difference. Steve also talked about the tree planting so the birds and bugs can come back here!

Freya

We looked at some photos on the screen before we walked round, but it's so much bigger on the site. It's huge! I really enjoyed seeing it and learned a lot about why this place will be important.

As part of the project, the team are constructing a large household waste recycling centre that will accept a large array of municipal waste, a dedicated area for small traders, a household waste recycling centre and a re-use shop for upcycled and donated items for re-sale.

Designed to handle 125,000 of municipal waste and recyclables per year, offering future proofed capacity for population growth.

Household Waste Recycling Centre

19 bays, each with two skips ensuring a maximum throughput of 45,000 tonnes annually, whilst ensuring effective material separation.

PV farm

A huge zone of photovoltaics in addition to the WTS roof to help power the hub and potentially sell back to the grid.

A £1 million odour control system, featuring high capacity extract fans, atomisers that dispense an AiroPure fragrance free mist, and carbon filtration systems, will ensure air quality

Being able to walk the site with the three girls has really opened our eyes. If it's possible, they seem to have an even keener eye on how important sustainability is and why facilities like this will make a real difference for their futures.

Going beyond the build

Whilst collaboration, innovation and flexibility have been vital in making this job a success, it's in the work beyond the build that makes a job shine even more.

Social Value commitments have included numerous school visits, work experience placements, apprenticeship starts and charitable donations to local organisations.

Sustainable decisions such as including a PV farm that will help power the entire site, and may even enable the facility to sell bac to the grid.

In addition, by using CarboniCa, our intelligent carbon reduction tool, we were able to redesign the concrete mix to include GGBS, and change from blast furnace steel to electric arc furnaced steel, saving 345t carbon.

The progress on the site is absolutely brilliant to see. The new Household Waste Recycling Centre and Waste Transfer Station will ensure we can continue to provide services for our ever-increasing population in the borough.

The finish line is in sight

Due to complete in August this year (2025), the team are in the final phases of completing the project, when this major project will then start setting the benchmark for waste and recycling across the UK.

The UK Governments 25 year environmental plan that sets ambitious targets for waste reduction, recycling and environmental protection, including a 65% recycling rate.

By developing this facility, Walsall will be able to meet these targets, whilst also having the flexibility necessary for future population growth.

At the same time, the workshop and reuse shop will enable skilled professionals to be able to fix and upcycle household items that are brought to the centre. In a step further, the shop will also help those in need the most, by providing donation boxes. It will be a facility the community can be proud of.

Being able to spend time with the next generation is something that's always been important to me. In fact, projects like this are often misunderstood, but today it was great to get lots of questions, lots of enthusiasm and affinity from the girls about how this job will positively impact their local community.
